Pump System Training

What does your company have in place for pump system training and follow up including pigging?

---

  • We provide training on pumps. It is part of the mineral processing certification that the process plan operator go through to achieve certificating with MIhr. The core learning document outlines the hazards and controls of working around pumps, provides explanation on centrifugal,  positive displacement, reciprocating, rotary and diaphragm pumps. How each pump operator, equipment checks and trouble shooting. We do not do pigging at our mine.
  • We have internal training but are looking to source external training options.
  • Currently our new pump tech review the pump operation manuals for the diesel pumps and our safe work procedures for working with HDPE pipe, Lay-flat hose, etc. They go through equipment training for the support equipment they require (excavator, small loader, backhoe, dozer). When they have reviewed the documentation the new pump tech job shadows and assists a senior pump tech until the senior tech feels they have sufficient experience to sign them off. As for pigging processes our site has stopped all pressuring of HDPE pipe.  We instead have an isolation and uncoupling procedure that governs how we open pipe connections to verify there is no residual pressure then completely uncouple the section of pipe and utilize hot water and gravity to clear any line obstructions or to drain the pipe.
  • We do a combination of in-house training on the specific equipment (pumps, mobile equipment, chainsaws, loaders, fusing and pigging, etc..).  We then complete a comprehensive task analysis to verify competency on our mine dewatering and pumping operators.
