Brake Testing Requirements

In the latest revision of OHS Legislation, the brake testing requirements for Mining Heavy Equipment has changed. Do you currently perform annual brake testing on a 9% ramp?

---

  • as we do not have ramps at 9% we do not, we conduct brake testing on a spec haul roads and follow the OEM frequency/specifications for break testing.
  • We do not even have a 9% ramp.   We perform brake testing on the steepest available ramp; our ramps are typically 5% grade.
  • Our brake test are done on level ground. We have not completed a test on a 9% grade. When performing brake tests, each test reduced the life of the brakes significantly. Haul Trucks are designed to gear down or use dynamic braking to reduce speed. Any heavy braking wears out brake components, to the point that 3 full braking events can produce sufficient wear requiring an overhaul or full brake pad change out. This can be a large and costly repair.
  • we do not
  • We do all our brake tests on level dry ground.
