Daily Emergency Steering Tests

Pertaining to Komatsu electric haul trucks, specifically 200T+ sizes: Are your equipment operators completing daily emergency steering tests on Komatsu haul trucks or is this a function of the maintenance department during a regular scheduled inspection? If it is a function of the maintenance department, at what frequency are you testing the emergency steering?

  • It is a requirement that the operators check their steering and brakes of their unit prior to every use. Since testing the emergency steering requires the machine to be shut down, tested, then restarted we do have our maintenance team test the emergency steering every 500 hours as an additional measure.
  • We train operators how to do it, but they do not perform it daily. Regular emergency steering testing is performed by Maintenance. Maintenance tests emergency steering every 500 hrs. (S1)
  • Our maintenance group checks the steering every 500 hours.  Our operators do not do a daily test.
  • Our Operators preform the steering test every shift as part of the pre-use inspection
